Facebook, Instagram, emails, kids, errands, life, all these things can affect your productivity. These distractions will wreak havoc on your focus, motivation, and productivity, and when it comes to work, productivity is the name of the game. Because of this, it is necessary to find a way to help you stay on track. The Pomodoro Technique can do just that.
What Is The Pomodoro Technique?
The Pomodoro Technique is a structured time management technique. This technique is designed to improve focus, productivity, and motivation over the course of a day. It can help you to feel like you were able to accomplish something at the end of the day. Whether it is a larger project or a series of smaller tasks, the Pomodoro Technique is going to make any work seem more manageable.
How Does It Work?
It is a simple process.
Set Up. You will want to grab a timer or (let’s be realistic) just grab your phone.
Pick Your Task. Figure out what you want to start with. It doesn’t matter what it is that you need to work on, it can happen with the Pomodoro Technique. Small tasks, big projects, or a series of small tasks, it doesn’t matter. Just figure out what it is that you need to get done and get yourself set up to work.
Eliminate Distractions. Close your email. Turn off social media. Shut down Netflix. Make sure you eliminate all of the distractions that are going to keep you from getting work done.
Set The Timer. You will set your timer for 25 minutes and get to work. You will work on your set task for that 25 minutes without wavering and without succumbing to distraction.
Break Time. Once the 25 minutes is up, you are going to take a nice 5-minute break. Get up from your desk. Stretch your legs. Make a cup of coffee. Whatever you need to do.
Repeat. You will repeat this process of a 25-minute work session and a 5-minute break 3 times. After the 4th 25-minute work session, you will take an extended 20-minute break.
This process can be repeated as many times as you feel is necessary. The Pomodoro Technique is like interval training for your brain with short bursts of work followed by staggered break times. It is a great way to get your brain into a focused place in order to get done all those things you just keep putting off because they seem daunting. This technique will give you control over your work, which can be extremely empowering after feeling like your work had the power over you.
